They became important especially at the present time. Foreign languages are needed as the main and most efficient means of information exchange between the people of our planet. The native speakers of English live in Great Britain, in the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada and South African Republic. As a second language it is used in the former British and US colonies. English ought to be used as one of the official languages of the United Nations Organisation and other political organisations. It is the language of computer software, politics, literature, education, modern music, international law and tourism. Learning of foreign language is not an easy thing. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and patience. But every educated person, very good specialist has to know English because it is absolutely necessary nowadays. It is well known that reading books in the original, talking with the English -speaking people will help a lot. When learning a foreign language you are to learn the culture and history of the native speakers. You may learn any foreign language. They are all important.

More than 100 different nations and nationalities live there. Moscow is the capital of our Motherland. Its population is over 10 mln. Russian is the official language of the state. The national symbols are the state white-blue-red flag and 2-headed Eagle. The Russian Federation is a constitutional state headed by the President. According to the Russian Constitution the power of the government consists of 3 branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The legislative power belongs to the Council of Federation (upper chamber) and the State Duma (lower chamber). Each chamber is headed by the Speaker. The executive power belongs to the Government (the Cabinet of Ministers) headed by the Prime Minister. The judicial power belongs to the system of Courts comprising the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court and federal courts. Our country has a multiparty system. The foreign policy of the Russian Federation is that of international cooperation, peace and friendship with all countries of the Globe.

There are many large cities: Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh. The UK is a constitutional monarchy, headed by the Queen. But her Power is limited by the oldest Parliament in the World. It consists of 2 chambers: The House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Government is headed by a Prime Minister – the leader of the party having the majority in the House of Common. The country has a multiparty system. According to the USA Constitution the powers of the Government are divided into 3 branches; legislative, executive and judicial. The legislative power belongs to the Congress consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate represents the states while the House of Representatives – population. The executive power belongs to the President and his Administration (the Vice-President and the Cabinet of Ministers) headed by the Prime Minister. The judicial power belongs to the Supreme Court and federal courts. The country has a multiparty system. The largest of the parties are the Republican (symbolized by a donkey) and the Democratic (symbolized by an elephant). Nowadays the USA is one of the leading powers of the world due to its economic, political and military influence.

Patriotic Symbols The American flag is often called the “Stars and Stripes.” It has thirteen stripes and fifty stars, one for each state. There are many rules for the flag: for example, you should display it only during the day, and you should fold it in a special way. Everyone called him Uncle Sam. The first Letters of Uncle Sam, “U.S.”, were the same as the first letters of the United States. After the war, cartoons of Uncle Sam as the U.S. government began to appear. The U.S. has an official song, “The Star-Spangled Banner”. It is sung at many sporting events and public celebrations. It was written by Francis Scott Key. He was on a British ship, which was attacking Fort McHenry outside Baltimore. The attack started on September 13th, 1814 and continued all that day and night. Suddenly, early in the morning of September 14th, they saw the American flag flying from the fort. Key was so excited he began to write down his feelings in a poem. At first “The Star-Spangled Banner” was sung to an old British drinking song. Later, music was written by John Stafford Smith. In March 1931 Congress officially approved the song as the national anthem. Every state in the U.S. has its own flag, its own symbol and its own song too. These are not as well known as the national ones, but they are used in all state ceremonial events.

During the first and second courses, the Queen speaks to the person on her left and then she speaks to the person on her right for the rest of the meal. When the Queen finishes her food, everybody finishes and it’s time for the next course!

The idea of success is important to Americans. They believe that if they work hard they can have what they want and be what they want. This is a part of what they call “the American Dream”. Perhaps this is why American are so hard-working. They do not take many vacations. There are only 5 national holiday that are celebrated in every state. These are New Year’s day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day. On these days, government offices and banks are closed. There are other important public holidays, but they are not celebrated everywhere. Seven state do not celebrate Columbus Day. And some special holidays are not public holidays at all. New Year’s day - January 1. On that day families and friends meet for a meal, make promises for the next year, whatch Macy’s Day Parade in New York and football games on TV. M.L.King’s Day is celebrated on the third Monday in January. Martin Luther King was an very important black leader who wanted equal rights for black people. He was murdered in 1968, Because of his work, Congress made his birthday a public holiday in 1986. Washington’s Birthday is celebrated on the third Monday in February. George Washington was the first President of the USA. He was also a brave soldier and a very honest man. On this day students read about him and business display flags. The Flag day (June 14th). “The Stars and Stripes” was first celebrated in 1877 on the Flags hundred birthday. Many people display a flag on this day, but it is not a major holiday and business stay open Remembrance Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May. Independence Day is celebrated on July 4. On this day in 1776, the U.S. declared its Independence from England. It was the beginning of a new nation There are parades, games, sports with prizes, picnics and firework in every town and city.Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September by labor union parades. It is a day of rest for the workers.Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Many people display a flag to honer who discovered 1492 the country. Veteran’s Day is celebrated on November 11. There are memorial services, special dinners and speaches to remember all the people who fought in the wars – the living the wall as dead. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. In 1621 William Bradford, the Governor of Massachusetts, decided to have a thanksgiving dinner for all the people. He wanted to thank God for many things. The meal lasted 3 days. Today the turkey is usually eaten by the family. Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December as a birthday of Jesus Christus – our God.
