TRANSISTORS

Transistors amplify current, for example they can be used to amplify small currents. In many circuits a resistor is used to convert the changing current to a changing voltage, so the transistor is being used to amplify voltage. There are two types of standard transistors, NPN and PNP, with different circuit symbols. The letters refer to the layers of semiconductor material used to make the transistor. Most transistors used today are NPN because this is the easiest type to make from silicon. Transistors produce heat because of current flowing through them. Power transistors need heat sinks because they pass large currents. The heat sink helps to remove heat to the air.

Integrated Circuits (Chips)

Integrated Circuits are usually called ICs or chips. They are complex circuits which have been etched onto tiny chips of semiconductor (silicon). The chip is packaged in a plastic holder with pins spaced on a 0.1" (2.54mm) grid. Very fine wires inside the package link the chip to the pins. The pins are numbered anti-clockwise around the 1С (chip) starting near the notch or dot. Many ICs are static sensitive and can be damaged when you touch them because your body may have become chained with static electricity, from your clothes for example. You should earth your hands by touching a metal water pipe or window frame before handling the IС. For more sensitive (and expensive!) ICs there is special equipment: earthed wrist straps and earthed work surfaces.

Logic ICs (chips)

Logic ICs process digital signals and there are many devices, including logic gates, flip-flops, shift registers, counters and display drivers.

CMOS

CMOS is pronounced "see-moss" and stands for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor. This family of logic ICs are in 14-pin or 16-pin packages. They use CMOS circuitry which means they use very little power and can work with a wide range of power supply voltages (3 to 15V). It makes them ideal for battery powered circuits.

CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS

Materials can be divided into three groups according to their resistance:

1) Conductors are materials having a low resistance so that current easily passes through them. The most common conductors are metals. Metals are used to make connecting wires, switch contacts and lamp filaments. Silver, copper and aluminum are the best of them. Copper is widely used to produce wire conductors. Wire conductors are used to connect a voltage source to a load resistance. Since copper wire conductors have a very low resistance a minimum voltage drop is produced in them. Most materials change the value of resistance when their temperature changes. Metals increase their resistance when the temperature increases while carbon decreases its resistance when the temperature increases. Thus metals have a positive temperature coefficient of resistance while carbon has a negative temperature coefficient.

2) Insulators are materials having a very high resistance. Current passes through insulators with great difficulty. The most common insulators are air, paper, rubber, plastics, polythene and PVC (polyvinylchloride). PVC is widely used as an outer covering for wires to prevent them making contact. Any insulator can conduct current when a high enough voltage is applied to it. The higher the resistance of an insulator, the greater the applied voltage must be. When an insulator is connected to a voltage source, it stores electric charge and a potential is produced on the insulator. Thus, insulators have the two main functions: to isolate conducting wires and thus to prevent a short between them and to store electric charge when a voltage source is applied.

Here is a list of conductors: gold, silver, copper, aluminum, brass, bronze, iron, steel, mercury, graphite, water and insulators: teflon, glass, porcelain, polyvinylchloride (PVC), fiberglass, rubber, ceramic, oil, quartz, plastic, air, diamond, dry wood.

3) Semiconductors are materials having a moderate resistance.

Examples of semiconductors are germanium and silicon. Semiconductors are used to make diodes, LEDs, transistors and integrated circuits (ICs, chips).
