LONDON

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and of England. It is one of the world's major business, political and cultural centres. The capital of the former British Empire, London is a leader in international finance, communications, entertainment, fashion and the arts and has considerable worldwide influence.

Actually, London can be divided into several parts: the City of London, or Downtown, the West End, Westminster and the East End.

The City is the oldest part of London with narrow streets and pavements. There are many offices, companies and banks in this part of London. The City of London is the financial centre of the United Kingdom. Only a few thousand people live there, but in the day-time it is full of people - as about half of million people come to work there. The biggest banks and offices are concentrated in the City.

The West End is the centre of London. It is full of richest hotels, largest super-markets, best cinemas and concert-halls. There are a lot of beautiful houses and gardens. Only well-to-do people can live there.

Another important district of London is Westminster, where most of Government buildings are situated. Westminster Palace is the seat of the British Parliament. Westminster Palace was founded in 1050. It is situated in the centre of London.

The Towers of the Houses of Parliament stand high above the city. On the highest tower there is the largest clock in the country which is known to the whole world as Big Ben. One can hear Big Ben strike every quarter of an hour. The clock Big Ben came into service in 1859. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain.

The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. It was built in the 18th century. The Royal Family occupies the north wing of the palace and the Royal Standard flies at the masthead when the Sovereign is in the residence.

There are many nice squares in London. Trafalgar Square is one of them and it is in the centre of the West End. One can see a statue of Lord Nelson in the middle of this square.

There are many museums, libraries and galleries in London. The Tate Gallery is one of the well-known galleries in London. Henry Tate was a sugar manufacturer. He was fond of paintings and collected many pictures.

The British Museum is a very interesting place in London. It was founded in 1753. The library of this museum has lots of books.

The East End of London is the industrial area and the place where the working people live. There are many factories, workshops and docks there. The East End, lying eastwards from the City is very large and crowded.

Red Square is one of the most beautiful squares in the world. In the 17th century the square was called «red» which means «beautiful» in old Slavic. The square has witnessed many historic events. Here ceremonies, national celebrations and executions took place. In the centre of it you can see the Mausoleum near the Kremlin wall. On the south side of the square is St.Basil's Cathedral. In the middle of the 16th century St.Basil's Cathedral was built under Ivan IV (the Terrible) to celebrate the annexation of Kazan and Astrakhan. The Russian masters Posnik and Barma built this architectural masterpiece.

The monument to Minin and Pozharsky is situated in front of the Cathedral.

The monument was sculptured by Ivan Martos in classical style. It is devoted

to the victory of 1612 war against the Polish invaders.

On the east side of the square is the largest department store of the capital. On the north side of the square is the Historical Museum. Its collection covers the Russian history from ancient times to the end of the 19th century.

Moscow is famous for its monuments. You can find here monuments to outstanding writers, poets, scientists, revolutionaries. New York

Visitors to the USA come to New York city first and this is where they can get acquainted with the American way of life, American culture and American language, New York has always been the gateway to the USA. But it is more than just a door, it is also a window through which the life of the whole nation may be observed. New York is the financial center of the country where «money-making» is the main law of life. New York is the symbol of capitalism and its Wall Street has become a nickname for big monopolies all over the world.

One of the largest cities in the world New York extends for 36 miles from north to south and is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River. In the 18th century New York grew into the largest city of the USA. Now New York is a great sea-port, the leading textile and the financial center of the country. Manhattan Island (the central part of New York) with the Wall Street district is the heart of America's business and culture and the city of sky-scrapers. The highest of them is the 102-storey Empire State Building. In Manhattan at Broadway and 116 Street is campus of Columbia University, the biggest educational establishment of New York, and near it are houses of Harlem. There is not one Harlem but three: Spanish, Italian and the Black Harlem. The Black Harlem is the most overcrowded and its shabby houses contrast with rich houses on Sugar Hill to the North, where the most prosperous people live.

It is a big modern city, with a heavy traffic. When you come to New York you can see lots of cars, big and small, black and yellow, old and modern; you don't see any trees or flowers in the streets, but only you can see and hear advertisements everywhere. There is no getting away from them. Advertisements fill the newspapers and cover the walls, they are shouted through loud speakers and shown in the cinemas.

Subway (the metro is called «subway» in America) provides the cheapest and fastest way to travel.

The population of New York is about 9 million people (together with the suburbs — 12 million people). It is really a very large city — a city of many districts where not only big businessmen, but millions of workers live.

In New York five people out of every eight are foreigners or children of foreigners. Every day, 67 foreign-language papers are published here. If you are crossing New York City by subway, look at the newspapers other people  around read.

New York is the city of contrasts. It’s  business city which dies each day at five o’clock; pleasure city with bars and cinemas and crowds of people during the night; middle-class city with elegant streets, lighting, neatly painted doors, and the poorest and the dirtiest city.

The police force employs 25,000 officers but still the crime record is very high in New York.

WASHINGTON, D. C

There are two Washingtons in the USA. First Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, the state named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. The state capital is Olympia, and the largest city is Seattle. The second Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It is located in the District of Columbia. The district is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America. Washington is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The capital owes a great deal to the first President, George Washington.

It was Washington who selected the site for the District and laid the cornerstone of the Capitol Building, where Congress meets. It is not the largest city in the US. It cannot be compared in size with cities like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and Los Angeles. In the political sense, however, it is the centre of the republic and the most important city in the United States

Washington was founded in 1791 for the purpose of serving as the capital of the United States of America. Many people consider Washington to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There are many parks, wide streets and impressive buildings. In the centre of the city, there is Capitol Park, where visitors' eyes focus on the Capitol, the home of American Congress.

Many visitors come to Washington to see the White House. It is the oldest public structure in the capital, built in 1799. The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States.

Other landmarks of Washington are memorials, dedicated to three American Presidents. They are the Washington Memorial, built in honour of the first American President, the Lincoln Memorial, which is devoted to the memory of the sixteenth President of the USA, the author of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Jefferson Memorial which was built in honour of the third President of the USA, who was the author of the Declaration of Independence.

The Library of Congress, which holds five million books, the National Gallery of Art, the Capitol are very famous and interesting sightseeings of Washington.  If you are interested in the law-making centre of the country you must go to the Capitol, with its great House of Representatives and Senate Chamber.

The Capitol is located in the very centre of Washington, not far from the Library of Congress. It is situated on the Capitol Hill, the highest point of the city. The Capitol is the highest building in Washington. There is a law in Washington not to build buildings higher than the Capitol. George Washington laid the corner stone of the Capitol on September 18, 1793. The Capitol is the home of the United States government.
