MODE OF TRANSPORT

At the heart of logistics are transport vehicles moving goods between suppliers and customers. Transport is responsible for the physical movement of materials between points in the supply chain. In practice, organizations face a lot of questions connected with transport because it is one of the most expensive parts of logistics. Organisations make a series of decisions about the form of transport. What mode of transport is best? Should they run their own transport or use a third-party carrier? What kind of vehicles should they use? Can they back-haul? The most important of these is the question of the transport mode.

The mode of transport describes the type of transport used. There are basically five different options - rail, road, water, air and pipeline. Each mode has different characteristics, and the best in any particular circumstances depends on the type of goods to be moved, locations, distance, value and a whole range of other things. Sometimes there is a choice of mode. Often, though, there is little choice.  If you want to deliver coffee from Brazil to Amsterdam, you will use shipping; if you want to move gas from the Gulf of Mexico to Dallas, you use a pipeline, if you want an express parcel service across the Atlantic, you use air freight.

Road is the most widely used mode of transport and is used - at least somewhere - in almost all supply chains. Its main benefit is flexibility, being able to visit almost any location. Although the maximum speed on roads is limited, this ability to give a door-to-door service avoids transfers to other modes, and can give a shorter overall journey time. The plane travels faster, but when you add on the travel times to and from the airports, check-in and boarding, it is faster to catch a bus between the city centres. Nonetheless, travel speed can be an important consideration, especially as roads are becoming more congested and vehicles are likely to move even more slowly.

Road transport has the advantage of being able to use extensive road networks. Unlike rail, these already exist, so users do not have to build and maintain their own tracks. Also, vehicles do not have to keep to such rigid timetables, so they can go on journeys at short notice and with little planning. There is a huge number of different types of road vehicle. Many of these are specialised, and designed for specific purposes, and there are different regulations in different countries.

1.2. Answer the following questions to the text in written form.

1. What does the best mode of transport depend on?

2. What can you say about advantages and disadvantages of road transport?

3. How can you define the main benefit of road transport?

4. Can you compare the advantages of rail and transport?

5. For most organisations road transport is the only realistic mode of transport. If this is true, why do so many people disapprove of heavy lorries?

MEETING WITH A POTENTIAL CUSOMER

Jack Evans, Sales Manager of Truck Motor Ltd., is talking to a Russian businessman, who is visiting the factory.

Evans:    When we set up this visit, Mr. Ivanov, I forgot to ask you how you heard about us. Did you see our goods on display at the London exhibition?

Ivanov:    No, it was nothing like that, actually. I saw your trucks when I was visiting a terminal in Spain. They were operating very efficiently, even though they were over ten years old.

Evans:    That's because we offer a good after-sales service. We always promise to get spare parts to customers as fast as possible.

Ivanov:    I like to hear that. So often, suppliers just don't want to know as soon as one of their machines breaks down.

Evans:    It's not the way we run our business. When we sell our goods, we offer a complete package: a high-quality product, competitive price, two-year guarantee, reliable after-sales service... and, of course, a good service manual — one that the customer can understand easily.

Ivanov:     I'm impressed by your approach to business. We'll probably do a deal while I'm here.

Evans:      Ah, that sounds interesting.

Ivanov:     If possible, I'll place an order for your RX5 model.

Evans:      Good.

Ivanov:     If I did, could you dispatch, say, four or five immediately?

Evans:     Yes. We've got plenty in stock at the moment. No problem.

ROAD TRANSPORT COMPANIES

Rusavto, an international road carrier, has been operating on the world market of transportation and forwarding services since 1968.

It is a major transport company which deals with first-class partners throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East and carries out large orders of about 2 million tons every year. For the last few years international carriage of goods has considerably increased, the volume of transported cargoes is growing, new routes appear and the range of goods is becoming wider.

On the European market of transport services the Company closely cooperates with more than a hundred international transport and forwarding firms.

The Company has an up-to-date fleet of about 3,500 motor vehicles with carrying capacity of 20 to 30 tons and a body volume from 60 to 103 cu.m. which are capable of carrying any cargoes, including those requiring certain temperature conditions, containers, large size and bulky cargoes. More than half the trucks are the products of such well-known manufacturers as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, etc. Among the imported semi-trailers are Trailor, Schmitz, and Koegel. All these vehicles satisfy the international requirements regarding technical reliability, safety of goods and ecological standards. The vehicles of Rusavto meet the requirements of international transportation by road and are used on the routes of the CIS and Europe.

Depending on conditions, road transport can normally carry loads up to, say, 20-30 tonnes. The European Union has a gross limit of 42 tonnes and different limits apply in other areas. In exceptional circumstances, very large loads can be carried, such as the loads of a thousand tonnes that are moved for oil companies in the Arctic. However, weight and size limits mean that road transport is more often used for smaller loads. These become relatively expensive, so road transport is generally used for shorter distances.

The Company transports large consignments on the door-to-door principle. It also handles small consignments of less than 5 tons at their terminals in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other places, stores them in warehouses, makes customs clearance and delivers groupage cargo to the final destination.
